The CC720 Screw Cap Tightening Torque Head is at the heart of all of our Capping Machines. Introduced over 15 years ago, the CC720 has undergone several changes, but the fundamental method of the gripping jaw technology has remained the same.

Our latest version, the Mk. VI, is a high specification torque head. All of the components are fully machined to precise tolerances to achieve the aim of accurate and consistent torque values. Which are now required in modern machines and working environments.

We can supply the CC720 to you in two ways; either in one of our machines, or by itself for you to install into your own equipment.

Designed to cater for various styles of screw caps, from Ø10mm – to Ø120mm, our torque heads have the capability to handle most types of caps available, including; child resistant, tamper evident, pump-action spouted, jerry-can ribbed caps and even trigger-spray caps.

 

Introduction to the CC720 Torque Head

We are keen to work with you to supply the unit most suitable for your application, and can provide additional items where applicable. This may include orientation heads for trigger spray applications, or the inclusion of a transducer for measuring torque values.

If required, separate control modules, (both PLC and pneumatic logic), can also be included. Advice and assistance can also be supplied with the integration to the main operating system of the machine.

The torque heads are all CE marked and supplied with Certificates of Incorporation and where necessary, all pneumatic versions can be supplied, suitable for use in Zone 1 and Zone 2, Atex Environments.

The CC720 Screw Cap Tightening Torque Head is available in different formats. And each format is available in different variations to suit your needs and requirements, (for full details, see the Technical Specifications Sheets).

The four most popular formats are:

  • Standard Basic Unit, also known as ‘No Rise and Fall’ version. This consists of a driven rotor and gripping jaws, mounted on a back plate for customers to fit into their own machine and control the rise and fall of the torque head
  • 2-position, ‘Rise and Fall’ Unit. This is similar to the basic unit above, but incorporates a rise and fall cylinder to move the head up and down. This application is most suitable for simple cap tightening operations, where the cap has already been placed/pre-started
  • 3-Position, ‘Pick and Place’ Unit. With this application, two cylinders are used in tandem, with the torque head descending to a mid-position to pick a cap up, return to the start position, and finally descend the full stroke length to screw the cap onto the container
  • Twin Swing Head Unit. In this application two torque heads are mounted either side of a rotary actuator. They function so that whilst one head is screwing a cap on, the other is picking a cap up, before swinging through 180° to repeat the process.

Standard Basic CC720 Torque Head

The standard basic cc720 Torque Head, also known as the ‘No rise and Fall’ Torque Head, comprises a driven rotor assembly and gripping jaws, mounted on a back plate for you to fit into your own machine. This enables you to control the vertical movement of the torque head and can therefore be used for simply cap tightening or for ‘Pick and Place’ operations.

The standard unit is supplied with an electric servo motor, which allows independent control of Speed and Torque within accurate limits.

A pneumatic motor option allows for the torque head to be used in Zone 1, Hazardous Environments, and can be supplied with the necessary ATEX Certification.

2-Jaw or 3-Jaw versions of the Rotor assembly are available, depending on the application.

Change part rubber lined gripping jaws are available to suit all types of cap, from Ø10mm – Ø120mm, as standard. Other sizes may be available on special order.

CC720 2-Position ‘Rise and Fall’ Torque Head

The CC720 2-Position ‘Rise and Fall’ Torque Head is the ideal Torque Head to help you in any cap tightening process. Using our unique gripping jaws system in conjunction with rise and fall cylinders it is the perfect unit for tightening pre-placed/pre-started caps of all shapes and sizes.

The cylinder stroke length is determined by the cap height; keeping the cylinder stroke to a minimum allows higher production rates to be achieved.

The standard unit is supplied with an electric servo motor which allows independent control of Speed and Torque within accurate limits.
A pneumatic motor option allows for the torque head to be used in Zone 1, Hazardous Environments, and can be supplied with the necessary ATEX Certification.

CC720 3-Position ‘Pick and Place’ Torque Head

The CC720 3-Position ‘Pick and Place’ Torque Head is used for most automatic capping processes. It uses our unique gripping jaws system in conjunction with two cylinders connected in tandem, for the purpose of picking the cap up before applying it to the container.

The stroke length of each cylinder is selected to suit the cap height and the presentation device; keeping the cylinder strokes to a minimum allows higher production rates to be achieved.

In operation, the Torque head descends from its ‘Start’ position, utilising the upper cylinder, with the jaws open to the ‘Mid’ position, where the cap is presented. The jaws grip the cap and retract to the ‘Start’ position to allow the presentation device to move away. The head then descends fully, using both upper and lower cylinders, to screw the cap on. When the desired torque is achieved, the jaws release the cap and the head fully retracts to the ‘Start’ position.

The standard unit is supplied with an electric servo motor which allows independent control of Speed and Torque within accurate limits.

CC720 Rotary Twin Torque Head

The CC720 Rotary Twin Torque Head is used to give faster speeds in the automatic capping process. Two standard torque heads are mounted either side of a rotary actuator. Using our unique gripping jaws system in conjunction with the actuator, the torque heads function, so that whilst one head is screwing a cap on, the other is picking a cap up, before swinging through 180° to repeat the process.

In operation, the Torque head descends from its ‘Start’ position, utilising the upper cylinder, with the jaws open to the ‘Mid’ position, where the cap is presented. CC720 Torque Head with Torque Transducer

We have teamed up with Sensor Technology to produce a new Capping Torque Head with a built in torque transducer.

The Torqsense transducer accurately measures the torque applied to the cap on the bottle, and will supply digital and analog data which will give proof of performance, consistency and batch tracability during the capping operation. The data can be used and displayed in several ways. On a simple panel mounted digital display.

Using a laptop PC running Sensor Technology’s ‘Torqview software package, which will display the applied torque in digital and graphical modes and also enable the torque readings to be stored on the hard drive for analysis later.

Using an analog input of the machine control PLC to check that the applied torque values are within the limits set by the manufacturer and raising alarms if the values fall outside these limits.

Using a digital recorder which will provide validation and secure data collection compliant with 21 CFR Part 11 regulations.

The new torque head can be incorporated into Cap Coder’s extensive range of automatic capping machines, allowing for constant monitoring of the applied torque during a production run.

There is also available a enhanced version of their popular CC1440 semi-automatic cap tightening machine which incorporates the new torque head, an ABB SM500F digital recorder for secure data collection, and applied torque monitoring through the machine control PLC.
